May 21st-24th, 2014
The Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band presented a half day Cultural Event at Grenfell College in Corner Brook during the 2014 Aboriginal Awareness Week. It gave participants tangible and intangible experiences that were related to various objectives from the curriculum. These include Aboriginal culture, oral traditions, decision-making, healthy living, problem-solving, conflict resolution, sustainability and the environment.
Participants were taught the importance of respect within the Mi’kmaq culture through an Aboriginal perspective of respecting their self, each other, Mother Earth, and other cultures.
Members from the Benoit’s Cove Drumming Group led participants in drumming and singing, and several other Mi’kmaq traditions were performed such as a smudging, prayer, crafts such as medicine pouch-making, and medicine bundle teaching.
This was an excellent, informative and well-received afternoon.
